Information Literacy

Information literacy tools, aids, services for faculty.

Mission

Bishop Library’s Information Literacy and Library Instruction program works collaboratively with faculty to help students develop the skills needed to find, locate, analyze, evaluate, and use information effectively, efficiently, and ethically.

Bishop Library encourages the development of information literacy skills by:

  1. Providing both formal and informal instruction;
  2. Collaborating with faculty to integrate information literacy into the curriculum;
  3. Utilizing reference question interactions as an opportunity to teach;
  4. Assessing our effectiveness, and constantly renewing and improving our techniques.

Information Literacy

Forms the basis for lifelong learning, and is common to all disciplines, learning environments, and all levels of education.

An information literate individual can:

  • Determine  the extent of information needed;
  • Access  information effectively and efficiently;
  • Evaluate  information and its sources critically;
  • Incorporate  information into one’s knowledge base;
  • Use  information effectively to accomplish a specific purpose;
  • Understand  economic, legal, and social issues surrounding the use of information, and access/use information ethically/legally.
