What is a Dissertation?

A dissertation is required of doctoral study; it is a lengthy, formal document that presents new research, and that argues in defense of a particular thesis.

Request dissertations via Interlibrary Loan or ILLiad.

  • ILLiad is a service that will provide you with materials that LVC does not own.
  • WorldCat Dissertations provides an interlibrary loan link on each individual record.
  • You can also request a dissertation via ILLiad from the library's homepage.
  • With ILLiad, you'll either get a PDF of the dissertation sent to you electronically, or a hard copy that will need to be returned.

How long does it take?

  • It depends.  If the dissertation's coming in through the mail, allow two weeks.
  • If it's available electronically, it'll arrive within a few days.
